Porcelain Painting

Are we tableware or art work. We may be a work of art at one time, and we may be a party plate or daily tableware at another time. We are a cross between art and a dish.
"La pittura su Piatto" A picture drawn on a plate. The plate is the canvas. While the IN-GLAZE decoration expresses art in a soft and elegant manner, it is the high temperature firing that will determine the finish of the product.

INGLAZE decoration

There are three major methods of porcelain painting. The first is the conventional method by which a picture is painted on the glazed porcelain surface (fired at 700?C ~ 820?C, the second method is the IN-GLAZE method by which paint is mixed into the glaze, and the third method is to decorate or paint a picture onto the unglazed surface.
With IN-GLAZE decorating, color is added to the bone china or white porcelain with paint specifically designed for in-glaze decorating and then fired at a temperature of 1050?C ~ 1250 ?C. The firing temperature will differ depending on the material and glaze used, and it is important to assess and adjust the coloring temperature of the paint. Firing at a temperature slightly lower than the glost firing allows only the glaze to melt and the color to seep into the glassy layer, and colors generated from the chemical reaction are glassy coated, giving the product a lustrous, elegant and soft finish. This finish is the difference between the conventional and the IN-GLAZE method.

OVERGLAZE decoration

The over-glazed decoration is a method of painting pictures with pigments on the fired glaze face and then firing them at a low temperature (650 to 850 degrees Celsius). This firing temperature is considerably lower than those for the under-glazed and in-glaze decorations, and so the variety of useable colors becomes larger.

Safe as table ware

Conventional glazing is fired at a low temperature of around 800?C, and traces of the brush strokes produced by the artist who paint the glazed surface give the pieces an earthy finish, yet they are vulnerable to chafe. With the IN-GLAZE method, the pieces are fired at a high temperature; therefore, the paint seeps into the glaze and is protected by the glassy coating, making it safe for use as table ware.
